The New Big Red Machine
Few things in this world are flawless, but the Canadian Olympic hockey team is definitely one of them. Many people including, Bruce Bennett of CBS News have called the Canadian team this year the "new Big Red Machine." Canada went undefeated in 6 games. Something like this has not happened since the 1984 Olympics where The Soviet Union did the same. Canada did amazingly but many people speculate that they could have been defeated if conditions for the Swedish team were different. Already missing two of their star players, Henrik Zetterberg and Henrik Sedin due to injury, the Swedes faced another fatal blow when Nicklas Backstrom failed a doping test due to his allergy medication. Many speculate that if the Swedish team had been at full force they could have taken down this "New Big Red Machine". I do not think that Sweden would have been able to take on Canada even with all their players healthy and in the game. Not only was this their second Winter Olympic Gold but Canada crushed the competition with 0 losses in the Olympic games.Canada has a huge selection of players to choose from because of its massive hockey leagues. This allowed them an upper hand in the Olympics because they were able to create the best possible team with far more options than any other team in the Olympics. The Sochi Olympics were dominated over all by the Canadian mens team because of their large selection of talent and ability to play well with each other. As we saw on the U.S team, having super stars play well with each other is not an easy thing. This was something Canada was able to accomplish. They got their best players and gave them the conditions to play efficiently with one another. Canada could not be touched by anyone.
